Your Best Race Day

Only a few days left until the world renowned Chicago Marathon and on that day, 45,000 runners will flood the streets to accomplish their goals. Among the elites will be Jordan Hasay and Galen Rupp who you may recognize from the 2017 Boston Marathon. The streets of Chicago will be crowded with spectators as well.

For all you runners, I wanted to share a few race week tips with you!

Race week tips

1. Start hydrating a few days before the race. I usually try and drink half my body weight in water ounces each day. (110 pounds, about 55 ounces of water). Starting the Thursday or Friday before the race I try to up this to about 75 ounces of water each day. Yes, you will be going to the bathroom more often, but its worth it, I promise!

2. Just like hydration, sleep is important on race week. As a runner, I never sleep well the night before a big race. But if i’ve slept well during the week, my adrenaline will keep me going for the time I’m running.

3. Carbs- start carbo loading the week of the event as well. Avoid any new foods, two days leading up to the race

4. Lay out all your clothes the night before. One time one of my friends forgot her bib for a half marathon and a friend had to bring it to the course as a spectator. Most runners do a “flat lay” where they lay out their clothes and their energy gels in their room the night before the race. Also don’t forget to pack warmer layers- I usually wear a warmer layer and gloves that I don’t mind losing.

5. Know your morning routine, will you be taking an uber to the start? Will you be taking public transportation? Will you be walking? Will a lucky friend be dropping you off? Race start is 7:30am, I recommend being there at least 1 hour before the start. This will give you time to drop off your gear (if needed), and get situated and comfortable before the race begins. You will have time for last minute bathroom breaks.



1. Make sure to download the Bank of America Chicago Marathon app where you can live track 20 participants.

2. I recommend walking, biking, or taking public transportation to watch your racers on race day. It’s always hard to drive around during an urban race like Chicago Marathon.

3. Don’t forget to make a cheesy or corny sign to cheer on your friends- anything that will make a runner laugh during 26.2 miles is appreciated 🙂
