As we continue our Chic Home series, we will introduce to you some of Chicago’s beautiful homes and living spaces. We get to explore neighborhoods, admire architecture and decor all with the aim to inspire our own beautiful and unique sanctuaries!
Despite its name, Streeterville is really defined by water! Bordered by both Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, buildings in this neighborhood are built TALL to take advantage of the the beautiful views. Streeterville is an area with modern buildings and attracts glamorous young professionals, expatriates and visitors from all over the world. You’ll find people in the area very chic, professional and always in a rush! Very close to the LOOP and a stone throw’s away from the lake, nightlife around and much more. Attractions include Chicago’s iconic Navy Pier and the world-famous Magnificent Mile (aka – high-end, drool-worthy shopping!)
Despite its swanky reputation, Streeterville actually began life as a swamp until Chicago legend George Wellington Streeter had other ideas: While out on his little steamship in a Lake Michigan storm, Streeter ran up on a sandbar off Superior Street. Unable to move, he decided to stay put. Streeter convinced local builders to dump their debris near his ship, eventually creating 186 acres east of Michigan Avenue as the area filled in! Ever ambitious, Streeter then attempted to claim the newly formed land as a distinct territory – calling it the District of Lake Michigan. After decades of defending what became known as “Streeterville” with his army of tent-dwelling squatters until he was finally ousted in 1918.
In addition to Michigan Avenue, Streeterville is home to the John Hancock Building and Observatory (chic hint: have a drink with a view at The Signature Room!), the Historic Water Tower, Northwestern University’s Medical Center, and the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. In describing their neighborhood, our hosts love having the beach at their doorstep as well as the local parks, shopping and movie theater. Being on a quiet, clean street so close to downtown – they consider North Water Street the city’s best kept secret!
Overlooking a quiet corner of this bustling district is 415 E North Water Street! The owners of this condo apartment (high up on the 20+ floors) were originally looking for a single family home but were thrilled to find a hideaway in their favorite neighborhood. “The layout really sold us on this condo,” the couple told TCC, “we loved that the unit is divided into three wings and has a fantastic flow.”
Stepping into the apartment and having a look around, we completely understood what they meant. Situated on the northwest corner of the building, the winged structure of the condo along with the floor to ceiling windows maximize the incredible VIEWS – with a mixture of water and city skyline on all sides. The effect is that the incredible skyline, the movement on the water and the city’s vibrancy truly becomes an integral part of the condo’s decor.
With so much natural light in the unit, the owners chose to work with a muted palette. Low, modern furniture, rich wooden pieces and natural stone featured on the double-sided fireplace, kitchen and baths create a warm contrast to the bustling skyscrapers and waterways. The couple used a mix of textures and colors throughout the unit to subtly weave together natural elements into each room. Carefully chosen art pieces and distinctive furniture are scattered gracefully about the home. Check out our tour below!
We were so thrilled to be invited to this modern Chicago home – a slick urban sanctuary with spectacular views and the world at our fingertips. We can’t wait to be invited back for a sunset!
